Elsevier, Cancer Moonshot to team up on developing national benchmarking report

The White House's National Cancer Moonshot Task Force plans to develop the first-ever benchmark report on U.S. cancer research with the help of Elsevier, an information solutions company that publishes resources like The Lancet.

Elsevier will conduct a data-driven analysis to help identify what works well in U.S. cancer research and what areas are more challenging. The report will help measure the frequency and value of interdisciplinary collaborations and identify centers of expertise. Elsevier expects to complete the report this fall, in the hopes it can equip the Moonshot Task Force with the information it needs to make informed decisions about research investments.

"Cancer is a large, diverse and consistently expanding disease. There have been significant breakthroughs, but cancer itself is continually evolving which makes it extremely challenging to assess where the opportunities and challenges lie," Brad Fenwick, PhD, Elsevier's senior vice president for global alliances and project lead, said in a statement. "The first critical step on any journey is to know where you are. For the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative, we'll be providing an outline of the current state of cancer research relative to the areas of focus, as well as impact derived from the large data sets and research collaborations. Ultimately the report will provide a pathway to the most promising outcomes that will affect the greatest number of people."
