South Kivu is located over 430 miles south of where the outbreak first began, in North Kivu and Ituri provinces. The outbreak started on Aug. 1, 2018, and the DRC’s Health Ministry announced the disease’s spread to South Kivu province on Aug. 16, 2019.
The Health Ministry’s announcement comes days after researchers announced they had found the first effective treatments treat for Ebola and planned to make the drugs widely available at the DRC’s Ebola treatment centers.
The current outbreak has infected 2,765 people, of whom 1,808 have died, according to the DRC’s latest report.
