Control of CPE-related outbreaks in acute care settings worldwide: 4 findings

Infections associated with carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae have been increasing globally in recent times, and a new study published in The Journal of Hospital Infection examines these outbreaks in acute hospital settings.

Researchers combed through MEDLINE and EMBASE databases, abstract lists for key conferences and reference lists of key reviews as well as information on unpublished outbreaks from 2000 to 2015. Ninety-eight outbreaks were eligible. They then conducted a narrative synthesis of the evidence.

Here are four findings:

1. The number of CPE infection or colonization cases involved in outbreaks varied widely, from two to 803.

2. In the majority of outbreaks, multi-component infection control measures were used, commonly including: patient screening, contact precautions, hand-washing interventions and enhanced environmental cleaning/decontamination.

3. Researchers identified seven studies providing the best available evidence on the effectiveness of control measures.

4. These studies showed that CPE outbreaks can be controlled successfully by using a range of existing infection control measures.
