CDC grants $2.4M to five communities for Zika prevention

The CDC awarded $2.4 million each to five highly populated jurisdictions to establish, enhance and maintain information gathering for the rapid detection of microcephaly, a severe neurological birth defect associated with the Zika virus in which babies are born with abnormally small heads.

The five jurisdictions awarded funding are:

• Chicago
• Houston
• Los Angeles County
• New York City
• Philadelphia

As of Aug. 31, 2,722 cases of Zika have been reported to the CDC in the 50 states and Washington, D.C.
