CDC: 83% of Hospital Workers Received Flu Vaccinations This Season

Roughly 83 percent of healthcare personnel in hospitals have received flu vaccinations this season, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For the 2012-2013 flu season, vaccinations among healthcare personnel were highest among pharmacists (89 percent), physicians (84 percent), nurses (82 percent) and nurse practitioners/physician assistants (73 percent). Other clinical professionals averaged a vaccination rate of 77 percent.

Flu vaccination was lowest among administrative staff at 55 percent.

The vaccination rate among healthcare personnel in various settings has increased from 49 percent in 2008 but still remains below the national target, which is 90 percent.

Among unvaccinated healthcare personnel who did not intend to get the flu vaccination, the most common reason reported for not getting vaccinated was that they do not want vaccination. The second most common reason was the belief that the vaccination was ineffective.
