Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland and Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center are collaborating to tackle the issue of antibiotic resistance via a new entity, Case VA CARES.

The entity will focus on researching existing antibiotics, new drug discovery and decoy use for highly resistant bacteria. Case VA CARES will also partner with laboratories located around the world and work with scientists to track outbreaks of resistant organisms.

"An immediate goal of this initiative is to boost research into multidrug-resistant Gram negative organisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae and mycobacteria, which can cause tuberculosis and many other infections," said Pamela B. Davis, MD, PhD, dean of CWRU School of Medicine, in a statement.

Robert A. Bonomo, MD, medicine service chief at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, will head Case VA CARES. Clinicians from both the VA medical center and CWRU medical school will staff the new center.
