Calcium, vitamin D supplements may not lower fracture risk in 50+ year adults

Supplements that contained calcium, vitamin D or both may not prevent fractures in older adults, according to a study published in JAMA.

Researchers searched PubMed, Cochrane library and EMBASE databases and identified 33 primary randomized clinical trials. The trials, which compared calcium, vitamin D or both combined supplements with a placebo or no treatment for fracture incidence in adults older than 50 years, included 51,145 participants.

Researchers found there was no significant association of calcium or vitamin D with risk of hip fracture compared with placebo or no treatment. Additionally, there was no significant link between combined supplements and hip fracture compared with placebo or no treatment.

Researchers also did not find any associations between calcium, vitamin D or combined calcium and vitamin D supplements and the incidence of nonvertebral, vertebral or total fractures.
