For the study, researchers developed an assessment tool to evaluate how much alcohol hand rubs is used. They identified 1,103 points of care in 34 clinical units and more than 171 million hand hygiene indications per year in in-patient and emergency areas. At 100 percent hand hygiene compliance, the researchers determined 240,056 L of alcohol-based hand rubs would be necessary.
The researchers found the assessment was “invaluable” in determining supply and financial requirements to implement a sound hand hygiene program.
