Akron Children's Hospital opens Center for Gender Affirming Medicine

Akron (Ohio) Children's Hospital is now accepting patients at its Center for Gender Affirming Medicine, which offers healthcare services for LGBTQ youth.

Three things to know:

1. Patients ages 7 and older can receive various services at the center, including pubertal suppression, gender-affirming hormones and mental healthcare.

2. The center staffs a multidisciplinary team of physicians, social workers, nurse coordinators, mental health therapists and endocrinologists.

3. Prior to the center's opening, many LGBTQ patients had to travel to Cleveland for specialized care, according to Fox 8 Cleveland.

"By offering the care and support these patients need in a location close to home, we're helping them to have a better quality of life," Crytsal Cole, MD, the center's medical director, said in a news release.
