Researchers conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study in 20 countries in Europe and the Middle East. They collected data from files on 981 hospitalized patients with a diagnosis of complicated UTI during 2013-14.
The study shows treatment failure was observed in 26.6 percent of the patients and the all-cause 30-day mortality rate was 8.7 percent
Risk factors for treatment failure were:
• ICU admission
• Septic shock
• Corticosteroid treatment
• Bedridden
• Older age
• Metastatic cancer
• Catheter-related UTI
Management variables, such as inappropriate empirical antibiotic treatment or days to starting antibiotics, were not associated with treatment failure or 30-day mortality.
