5 Risk Factors for MRSA Infection Among Colonized Patients

Admission to the intensive care unit is a major risk factor for contracting the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection among patients colonized with MRSA, according to a study in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.

Researchers studied 75 patients colonized with MRSA from January 2003 to August 2011. Other risk factors for MRSA-colonized patients developing MRSA include the following:

•    Transfer from a nursing home
•    Prior history of MRSA
•    Experiencing respiratory failure
•    Receipt of transfusion
