4 features of perioperative surgical homes that improve quality, reduce cost

The perioperative surgical home model — a patient-centered, physician-led team-based model of coordinating all aspects of care for surgical patients — can improve care quality and also reduce healthcare costs, according to a review of the PSH model published in Milbank Quarterly.

Researchers from Texas A&M University and the American Society of Anesthesiologists analyzed 152 studies on PSH models published between 1980 and 2013. They categorized the studies as preoperative, intraoperative or postoperative.

Preoperative-focused studies saw a reduction in cost thanks to fewer unnecessary preoperative tests, and preoperative patient education helped reduce length of stays and readmission rates.

For intraoperative PSH models, studies cited process flow initiatives like real-time patient routing systems could reduce operating room delays and surgical cancellations.

The postoperative studies researchers examined found enhanced recovery can reduce complications and length of stays.
