Three things to know about it:

1. Lassa fever has the potential to cause an epidemic. Cases of Lassa fever have risen in Nigeria in the last 3 years.

2. Cases confirmed by labs have increased from 106 in 2016 to 143 in 2017 and had reached up to 562 cases by November 2018.

3. Researchers don’t know if the increase in cases is due to more people becoming infected through the virus, its geographical spread, or if the spike indicates higher rates of detection and diagnosis in clinical settings.
