12 findings on C. diff

The findings are presented in order of publication in Becker's Hospital Review, from January through May 16.

1. The combination of vancomycin and fecal microbiota transplantation is superior to only fidaxomicin or vancomycin for the treatment of recurrent Clostridium difficile infection, according to a Danish study.

2. Researchers found the emergency department was the most common location for patients to receive a C. diff diagnosis.

3. An antibiotic created by a researcher at Flinders University in Australia may be a breakthrough in the fight against C. diff.

4. Nonelderly patients are at risk for gastrointestinal symptoms for up to two years after C. diff infection, a study shows.

5. A study found that prior laxative use is common among hospitalized adults undergoing C. diff testing.

6. Patients hospitalized with C. diff infection experience high rates of 30-day readmission, a study shows.

7. Children using antibiotics and/or proton pump inhibitors face a higher risk of developing C. diff infection, according to a study.

8. A CDC report shows C. diff events in the U.S. reduced by 13 percent between 2016 and 2017.

9. Reducing total antibiotic use resulted in decreased rates of hospital-onset C. diff infection, according to a study.

10. The number of antibiotics given and hospitalization before admission affect the likelihood of contracting C. diff infection among acute leukemia patients, a study shows

11. Recent antibiotic use was strongly linked to the onset of community-associated C. diff infections in young children, researchers found.

12. A study shows that some C. diff infection contamination can be attributed to patients who transfer hospitals.
