JN.1 prevalence, by state

The omicron subvariant JN.1 has been identified in at least 37 states and the District of Columbia as of Dec. 18, according to outbreak.info, a platform that tracks data on COVID-19 variants and is supported by the CDC and other national research groups.

JN.1 is now dominant in the U.S., though the CDC said there is no evidence the subvariant presents a higher public health risk than other circulating variants. Nationwide, the subvariant accounts for an estimated 44% of COVID-19 cases, up from just 7.5% in the two-week period ending Nov. 25, CDC data shows.

The subvariant’s cumulative prevalence — which represents a ratio of sequences containing JN.1 to all sequences collected in the U.S. since the subvariant wasfirst detected Sept. 14 — is 2%, according to outbreak.info.

Below is a breakdown of JN.1 prevalence by state, based on the most recent data available from outbreak.info. As COVID-19 sequencing is not a random sample of mutations, the data represents outbreak.info’s best estimates of the subvariant’s prevalence, as opposed to true prevalence.

Note: Becker’s calculated each state’s estimated cumulative JN.1 presence using sequencing data from outbreak.info. Figures are rounded to the nearest thousands.
