Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.-based Phelps Hospital, part of New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, is the first in the nation to earn Age-Friendly Geriatric Surgery Verification from the American College of Surgeons.
The program launched in late 2025 and recognizes hospitals that tailor evidence-based care for geriatric patients across the surgical experience, according to an April 28 hospital news release. The standards reduce incidents of delirium and shorten the average length of stay after an operation.
Phelps Hospital received verification after ACS conducted a rigorous on-site visit and evaluated performance across six domains: age-friendly care leadership, alignment of treatment with patient goals, geriatric vulnerability screening, management of identified risks, age-specific postoperative care and ongoing data review. The evaluation found that the hospital consistently integrated geiratric-focused practices across the surgical continuum.
