Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed a new bill into law that enhances retaliation protections for nursing home residents, Fox 32 Chicago reported March 25.
Under the new law, facilities must notify residents of their rights and how to make complaints annually. The law gives nursing home residents the ability to file a civil lawsuit and potentially recover damages if they are retaliated against and prohibits nursing homes from retaliating against residents who exercise their rights.
Nursing home staff are now required to undergo in-service training to prevent retaliatory action from taking place.
The law goes into effect Jan. 1, 2026.
