Birmingham, Ala.-based Encompass Health plans to build a 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Bear, Del.
The facility will provide care for patients recovering from debilitating illnesses and injuries, including stroke, spinal cord injuries and complex orthopedic conditions. It will feature private patient rooms, a therapy gym with advanced rehabilitation technologies, an in-house dialysis suite, a pharmacy and a therapy courtyard, according to a March 18 news release.
The hospital will be Encompass Health’s second location in Delaware. The company is the largest owner and operator of inpatient rehab hospitals in the U.S., with 174 facilities across 39 states and Puerto Rico.
Over the past year, hospitals and health systems have been ramping up investments in inpatient rehabilitation to relieve capacity constraints and improve patient throughput. Demand for rehab services is also rising, driven by an aging population and more patients surviving complex conditions that require intensive post-acute care.
