CMS will begin publishing skilled nursing facility ownership data to its consumer-facing Care Compare website starting July 30.
CMS has published ownership information, including performance measures of entities under common owners and control, on its data website since September 2022. The recent move aims to present the information in a more easily accessible way for consumers, according to a June 18 CMS memo.
Here are three additional updates to CMS’ nursing home data reporting:
- Starting in July, CMS will calculate a facility’s health inspection rating based on the two most recent surveys, as opposed to the three most recent surveys. The change will have little to no effect on about 80% of nursing homes’ health inspection ratings.
“For facilities that had serious quality issues three surveys ago, but have taken strong steps to improve their quality, this change removes the negative impacts from their old performance and gives them credit for their efforts,” the memo said. “Conversely, facilities that had high performance three surveys ago, but had significant deterioration of quality, this change will no longer allow providers to continue to benefit from old performance that doesn’t reflect current conditions.” - CMS will begin to include Medicare and Medicaid claims data, as well as Medicare Advantage encounters data, when calculating the percentage of long-stay residents receiving antipsychotics.
The change will take effect Oct. 29 and raise the national percentage of long-stay residents receiving an antipsychotic from 14.64% to 16.98%. - CMS will remove the COVID-19 vaccination section from each nursing home’s Care Compare profile page beginning July 30.
