Sen. Schumer: CDC director agrees agency should research gun violence

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said newly-appointed CDC Director Robert Redfield, MD, agreed the agency should be allowed to dedicate funding to research on gun violence, according to The Hill.

The Dickey Amendment prohibits any federal funding promote or advocate for gun control, but doesn't explicitly ban research, although it has had an inhibiting effect on any CDC-backed studies.

HHS Secretary Alex Azar voiced his support for CDC gun research, and the omnibus government spending bill included language reiterating the CDC's authority to study gun violence.

After his meeting with Dr. Redfield, Mr. Schumer said the CDC director, "agreed there is no longer a prohibition on the CDC conducting research on the gun violence epidemic. That is a good first step but we have a lot of work to do to ensure the CDC initiates this extremely important research in the near future," according to The Hill.
