Lead was found in 14 percent of all foods, with eight different types of baby food containing lead in more than 40 percent of samples. Eighty-nine percent of grape juice samples contained detectable amounts lead, with 55 percent of apple juice containing the same amount.
In light of the results, the EDF is calling for greater regulations on the amount of lead allowed in materials that come into contact with food. The group also encourages lower allowable amounts of lead in food now that scientists have a greater understanding of the harmful effects of lead consumption.
