How healthy is your county?

County Health Rankings & Roadmaps created an interactive tool allowing users to discover how their county’s health compares to other counties across the U.S.

The project is a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Madison-based University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. The tool was designed to help researchers, policymakers and the public measure the health of almost every county in the nation and rank them within states. Officials said the goal of the project is to raise awareness about the many factors that can influence the health of a population and how health may be affected by a population’s geographic location.

Researchers synthesized publicly available survey data from a number of sources that were then further examined by staff at the National Center for Health Statistics, the CDC and The Dartmouth Institute. Counties were ranked according to summaries of a variety of health measures and outcomes, including average length of life, quality of life, health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors and physical environment.
