A proposed pharmacy distribution center tied to Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger was delayed after a zoning hearing in Hazle Township, Pa., raised concerns about hazardous materials and infrastructure, according to an April 6 report by Fox56.

The project, filed by NP Hazleton Logistics Owner Phase 2 on behalf of Geisinger, requires a special exception to store and handle materials classified as hazardous. The applicant requested a continuance during an April 6 zoning hearing, pushing further discussion to May 18.

Residents raised concerns about the types of substances that would be stored at the facility, as well as potential impacts on water safety and traffic along a local highway.

In a statement to Becker’s, Geisinger said the site would serve as a pharmacy distribution center, allowing it to “keep an inventory of critical medications right here in Luzerne County,” closer to its inpatient pharmacies, retail pharmacies and clinics.

The land is already zoned for industrial use, with the current review focused specifically on the handling of hazardous materials.

At the Becker's 11th Annual IT + Revenue Cycle Conference: The Future of AI & Digital Health, taking place September 14–17 in Chicago, healthcare executives and digital leaders from across the country will come together to explore how AI, interoperability, cybersecurity, and revenue cycle innovation are transforming care delivery, strengthening financial performance, and driving the next era of digital health.
