Researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha have partnered with local farmers and business leaders to launch NeuralRegen, a biotechnology startup developing colostrum-based therapies for neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
The company’s formation follows a study led by UNMC, the results of which were published Jan. 27 in open access journal Theranostics. The research highlights the therapeutic potential of extracellular vesicles derived from bovine colostrum, which the team said can survive digestion and deliver treatment payloads directly to tissues.
NeuralRegen plans to begin producing the vesicles for pharmaceutical use within six months. The collaboration originated with Oehlerking Farm in Elmwood, Neb., and received backing from Omaha-based business and philanthropic leaders who helped co-found the company.
The startup combines agricultural, scientific and business expertise in what its founders called a “farm to pharmacy” model for brain disease treatment.
