Moderna floats $110-$130 COVID-19 shot price

Moderna is ruminating about pricing its COVID-19 vaccine to cost between $110 and $130 once the federal government stops paying for it, The Wall Street Journal reported Jan. 9.

The tentative price is similar to Pfizer's projected cost of its COVID-19 vaccine: In October, a company spokesperson said it was considering listing its COVID-19 shot to be between $110 and $130 per dose.

"I would think this type of pricing is consistent with the value" of the vaccine, Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel told the Journal

Pfizer got some flack for valuing its COVID-19 vaccine to cost more than $100, but Georges Benjamin, MD, executive director of the American Public Health Association, told Becker's in December the preliminary cost range is "a negotiation strategy."

"Going from $0 to $100 for a vaccine [is] probably not going to happen," Dr. Benjamin said of the Pfizer vaccine entering the public market."

COVID-19 vaccines are expected to soon join the U.S. marketplace as the Biden administration plans to end the pandemic's public health emergency this spring.
