Louisiana State University of Alexandria and the University of Louisiana at Monroe have established a new pathway program for students pursuing a career in pharmacy.
The agreement allows Louisiana State University of Alexandria students enrolled in biology or chemistry bachelor’s degree programs with a preprofessional concentration to receive advising aligned with University of Louisiana at Monroe’s pharmacy school prerequisites, according to a May 22 news release. Eligible students may apply to pharmacy school after completing as few as 67 credit hours.
Under the partnership, the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s College of Pharmacy will reserve five seats per entering class in its Doctor of Pharmacy program for qualified Louisiana State University of Alexandria students who meet admission requirements and demonstrate a commitment to serving rural or underserved Louisiana communities.
The University of Louisiana at Monroe is home to Louisiana’s only public college of pharmacy, the release said. The agreement was designed to help address pharmacist shortages in rural and underserved areas of the state.
The partnership also includes efforts to connect students with healthcare systems and pharmacy employers, promote rural practice incentives and loan forgiveness programs, and track long-term workforce outcomes tied to the initiative.
