The Institute for Safe Medication Practices has signed a contract with the FDA to assist in evaluating products and issue alerts about emerging drug safety issues.

The ISMP, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on preventing medication errors, will collaborate with the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, according to an Oct. 21 news release.

Services the ISMP will provide include sharing its anonymous reports on medication errors with the FDA and providing surveillance reports on emerging safety concerns.

“Medication errors remain one of the most persistent and preventable sources of harm in healthcare,” said Marcus Schabacker, MD, PhD, president and CEO of ECRI, which oversees the IMSP.

“Preventing these errors demands a culture of vigilance, powered by data-driven insights and cross-industry collaborations including the FDA and patient safety leaders like ECRI and ISMP,” Dr. Schabacker said in the release. “We are proud to continue our legacy as a partner to the FDA in improving the safety of healthcare.”
