Kathleen Kirkland, PharmD, a pharmacist at a CVS store in North Carolina, went above and beyond the call of duty to help a customer by donating a kidney to him, WGHP-TV FOX8 reported Feb. 18.

The customer, Donnie Pickeral, has a rare form of kidney disease known as IgA nephropathy. He was placed on a transplant waitlist in 2019 after physicians discovered his kidneys were at 7 percent functionality.

Dr. Kirkland, who met Mr. Pickeral during a routine prescription pick-up in 2017, said it wasn’t a hard decision to offer to donate her kidney.

“I mean, I became a pharmacist because I wanted to help people. He’s one of my patients. I knew that if I was the right match for him — that was just meant to be,” she told WGHP-TV FOX8.

The pair were in fact a match and underwent successful surgeries in May 2020.
