American Pharmacists Association recognizes 13 with awards

Thirteen pharmacy leaders and companies were honored by the American Pharmacists Association for their contributions to the field in 2019.

The 12 awards and 13 recipients:

Remington Honor Medal: Lucinda Maine, PhD,  executive vice president and CEO of the American Association of Colleges and Pharmacy, is  the 2019 recipient of the Remington Honor Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the APhA. She was selected for her decades of leadership in advancing the field of pharmacy on both national and global levels.

1. Remington Honor Medal: Lucinda Maine, PhD,  executive vice president and CEO of the American Association of Colleges and Pharmacy, is  the 2019 recipient of the Remington Honor Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the APhA. She was selected for her decades of leadership in advancing the field of pharmacy on both national and global levels.

2. Hugo H. Schaefer Award. Kenneth Michael Hale, RPh, PhD, a clinical professor in the college of pharmacy at the Ohio State University,  received the 2019 Hugo Schaefer Award, which recognizes outstanding voluntary contributions to the pharmacy profession and society as a whole. Dr. Hale was selected for his efforts in establishing Generation RX Initiative, which provides research and tools to educate people about prescription drug abuse.

3. Hubert H. Humphrey Award. Michael Moné, JD, the vice president associate general counsel for regulatory affairs at Cardinal Health in Dublin, Ohio, won the Hubert Humphrey award, which recognizes those in the pharmacy field who have made major contributions in government and legislative service. Mr. Moné was selected for his regulatory work with several boards of pharmacy.

4. Good Government Pharmacist of the Year Award. Julie Akers, PharmD, professor at the Washington State University College of Pharmacy and active member of the Washington State Pharmacy Association Board of Directors, was awarded the Good Government award for her active involvement in the political process.

5. Gloria Niemeyer Francke Leadership Mentor Award. Milap Nahata, PharmD,  editor-in-chief of the Annals of Pharmacotherapy, was awarded the mentor award, which recognizes an individual who has promoted and encouraged pharmacists to attain leadership positions. Dr. Nahata was selected for her work in encouraging, influencing and guiding generations of pharmacy leaders.

6. H.A.B. Dunning Award. Grocery store chain and pharmacy Albertsons won the award, which recognizes an exemplary contribution to the APhA from a chain corporation, wholesaler or drug manufacturer. Albertson was recognized for its support of the APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists Operation Immunization and partnership with APhA to advance the delivery of pharmacists’ patient care services.

7. Distinguished Federal Pharmacist Award. Aimee Young, PharmD, pharmacist at Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service, won the distinguished pharmacist award for pharmacists who help improve  the health of the nation and populations they serve. Dr. Young is the first provider in the state of Alaska to obtain the Certified Pain Educator credential and has been instrumental in improving care and access to care at Anchorage-based Alaska Native Medical Center.

8. Distinguished New Practitioner Award.  Cortney Mospan, PharmD, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Wingate (N.C.) University School of Pharmacy, won the new practitioner award, which recognizes a new practitioner, within his or her first five years of practice, who has demonstrated mentorship, service and commitment to the profession of pharmacy. Dr. Mospan, who had also served as vice chair and chair of the APhA New Practitioner Committee, was recognized for her work in developing the Community Health Ambassadors program,  a community outreach initiative for new practitioners.

9. Community Pharmacy Residency Excellence in Precepting Award. Edith Mirzaian, PharmD, assistant dean of curriculum, director of curriculum and associate professor of clinical pharmacy at Los Angeles-based University of Southern California, won the residency excellence award which recognizes a pharmacy residency director who has demonstrated excellence in precepting, mentoring, leadership and residency program administration. Dr. Mirzaian was recognized for her involvement with the school of pharmacy’s training program,  one of the best in the nation.

10. Generation Rx Award of Excellence. George Downs, PharmD, dean emeritus of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and professor of clinical pharmacy, won the award for his commitment to substance abuse education.  

11. Honorary President. Dorothy Smith, PharmD, president and CEO of the Consumer Healthcare Information Corporation, was elected honorary president by APhA’s members for her contributions to the association. Through CHIC, she developed over 1,000 patient education programs to bridge the gap between health professionals, patients and the pharmaceutical industry.

12. Honorary Membership. The honorary membership award is bestowed upon individuals either within the profession or outside  who had a significant effect on public health, the pharmacy field or its practitioners. Katherine Keough, executive director for the National Association of State Controlled Substances Authorities, was selected for her leadership in addressing the opioid crisis. Linda Gibson, wife of the late former APhA president Bob Gibson, also was selected for being “a fierce advocate for pharmacy and the value that pharmacists bring to the table.”
