WellPoint Turning to Narrow Provider Network Strategy

Health insurer WellPoint is turning to narrow provider networks to prepare for industry changes in 2014, according to an analysis conducted by market intelligence provider HealthLeaders-InterStudy.

The insurer has established narrow networks in its 14 Blue Cross Blue Shield affiliate states to support narrow network health plans sold through the insurance exchanges established under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to the analysis. The narrow networks aim to lower health insurance premiums by excluding high-cost providers.

WellPoint subsidiary Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield is launching new, narrow-network insurance plans in New Hampshire, Missouri and Maine. The proposed plans have drawn criticism from policymakers and excluded providers, who say the narrow networks could limit access to care.
