Vanderbilt University Medical Center goes out of network with ACA plans

Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center will no longer be in network with individual health plans sold through the Affordable Care Act marketplace next year, Washington Examiner reports.

The three payers selling on exchange individual plans in Tennessee next year – BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Cigna and Humana – will all be outside of Vanderbilt's network. While the medical center was in network with BCBST this year, the insurer pulled back its 2017 ACA footprint last month in Nashville, Vanderbilt's headquarter location, as well as Memphis and Knoxville.

"As of now, we are participating in off exchange options offered through Aetna and Farm Bureau," Vanderbilt spokesperson John Howser told Washington Examiner. "If viable opportunities [are] present[ed] for expanding our participation in the exchange we will consider them."

Tennessee's individual ACA plans covered 231,700 residents this year. Seventy-three of Tennessee's 95 counties will have a single insurer selling individual ACA plans next year, according to the report.
