UnitedHealthcare, University of California launch 10-year value-based relationship

Payer UnitedHealthcare teamed up with the University of California for a 10-year strategic relationship to transition California into a value-based healthcare system.

Here are five things to know about the initiative.

1. San Francisco-based UC Health and Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealthcare and its Optum subsidiary will promote clinical research and design provider networks. Optum's network services and data analytics will be used by UC Health's five academic medical centers.

2. An accountable care organization will be created for large self-funded employer groups. Each patient will be paired with a UC Health primary care physician.

3. UnitedHealthcare will be in network with UC Health's medical centers. Physicians from UC Davis and UC San Diego will serve the insurer's Medi-Cal patients, joining UnitedHealthcare's Alliance health maintenance organization network.

4. Cambridge, Mass.-based OptumLabs will open a San Francisco-based facility. UC Health will have access to OptumLabs' database of unidentifiable claims information.

5. UnitedHealthcare will gift UC Health $1 million to support research. In addition, OptumLabs will sponsor a five-year internship to train healthcare data scientists.
