UnitedHealthcare expands corporate wellness program to include Fitbit health tracker

Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealthcare added the Fitbit Charge 2 fitness tracker to its employee wellness program.

The wellness program — called UnitedHealthcare Motion — is an employer-sponsored wearable device wellness program powered by Qualcomm Life, a Qualcomm Incorporated subsidiary. The integration of Fitbit Charge 2 into the program will allow participants to earn up to $1,500 in health savings account or health reimbursement account credits annually. To do so, participating employees must achieve one or more fitness goals designated by UnitedHealthcare's wellness program. Goals include taking 300 steps in five minutes an hour apart, at least six times daily; taking 3,000 steps in 30 minutes at least once daily; and taking 10,000 steps per day.

"This integration is a first of its kind for Fitbit and brings together market leaders in healthcare and technology to drive better health outcomes and cost savings for both consumers and employers," James Park, co-founder and CEO of Fitbit, said in a prepared statement.
