UnitedHealth operating 13 hospitals in South America; workforce surpasses 300,000

UnitedHealth Group now employs 300,000 workers across its health insurance and service lines, both nationally and globally, according to the Star Tribune.

The healthcare giant added 40,000 employees to its payroll last year alone. A bulk of the new hires — 23,000 — came with UnitedHealth's acquisition of Chilean healthcare company Empresas Banmedica in January 2018. Empresas Banmedica comprises a health plan, hospitals and clinics in Chile, Colombia and Peru.

UnitedHealth operates 13 private hospitals with more than 1,900 beds under the $2.8 billion Empresas Banmedica deal. Empresas Banmedica provides health benefits and healthcare services to 2.1 million people
