One-tenth of Kansas residents lacked health insurance: 6 statistics

In its Annual Insurance Update 2016, the Kansas Health Institute found 10.5 percent of Kansas residents were uninsured in 2014 — the Affordable Care Act's first full year — down from 12.3 percent in 2013.

The AIU used the American Community Survey, conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, as the primary data source. The latest available data from the ACS was from 2014.

Here are six statistics about the 301,926 uninsured Kansans in 2014.

1. Fifty-nine percent of all uninsured Kansas residents were ages 19 to 44, with individuals between ages 26 and 34 (20.1 percent) most likely to be uninsured. Children ages 0 to 18 represented 16 percent of Kansas' uninsured, while adults age 65 and older represented 0.7 percent of the state's uninsured, due to Medicare.

2. If Medicaid were expanded in Kansas, 96,434 uninsured individuals would have been eligible for coverage in 2014.

3. Approximately 50,133 residents were eligible but not enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP.

4. More than two-thirds of uninsured Kansas residents in 2014 had incomes above 100 percent of the federal poverty line. In addition, more than one-fourth of Kansans with incomes below 100 percent of the federal poverty line were likely to be uninsured.

5. White, non-Hispanic Kansans made up 57.7 percent of the uninsured population in 2014. However, in terms of likelihood of being uninsured, 7.9 percent of white, non-Hispanic residents were likely to be uninsured, compared to 25.9 percent of Hispanic residents and 15.7 percent of black and African American residents.

6. Although Hispanic residents accounted for 11.4 percent of the state's population, they represented 27.9 percent of Kansas' uninsured.
