NYC unions to switch retirees to Medicare Advantage plans

New York City public-sector unions are proposing a plan to switch Medicare beneficiaries to privatized health insurance through Medicare Advantage as early as July 1, a move that would affect 200,000 retirees, according to The Intercept.

The proposal comes as retiree healthcare costs continue to increase and strain city budgets, the article said.

Retiree advocates are arguing against the plan, citing concern over care access barriers and higher costs.

"We do not have these barriers now, and we do not want them in the future," Council of Municipal Retiree Organizations President Stu Eber told the publication. "Gatekeepers can delay our necessary health care and even kill us."

Specific details regarding the proposed switch to the Medicare Advantage plan have yet to be released by the city, according to the article.
