Justice Department calls for final approval in CVS-Aetna merger

The Department of Justice formally requested a judge sign off on its settlement to allow CVS Health to acquire Aetna for about $70 billion, according to Reuters.

The Justice Department sent its formal ask to Judge Richard Leon of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Feb. 25. Mr. Leon is tasked with completing certain procedures required by the Tunney Act. While CVS and Aetna closed their deal in November, the Tunney Act is a federal law requiring the Justice Department to get a federal court's approval for mergers.

Mr. Leon previously spoke out against the government, CVS Health and Aetna for closing the deal before he approved the consent order. Following the government's request for approval, Mr. Leon can sign off on the deal or schedule a hearing on the matter, according to Reuters.
