Individual premiums to rise at least 18% in Maryland

Premium rates for individual health plans sold on Maryland's ACA exchange will jump between 18 percent and about 30 percent on average for 2017.

UnitedHealthcare is the only insurer slated to exit the exchange at the end of the year.

Insurers were approved the following average rate increases for individual, on exchange plans, according to HealthCare.gov's rate review page:

  • CareFirst Blue Choice (18.2 percent)
  • CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield (31.4 percent)
  • Evergreen Health (19.6 percent)
  • Kaiser Permanente (26.6 percent)

Maryland Insurance Administration Commissioner Al Redmer Jr., said "[a] broad segment of the middle class finds the insurance unaffordable," according to The Baltimore Sun.

Maryland's exchange will see a streamlined website, mobile app and consumer assistance for open enrollment 2017, which begins Nov. 1. The state has an enrollment goal of 171,000, up about 5 percent from last year.
