Aetna, Humana, Anthem and Cigna released their financial results for the third quarter of 2016.
1. Aetna's profit in Q3 of FY 2016 increased 8 percent from the same period last year to a total of $603.9 million. The Hartford, Conn.-based payer reported a 6 percent increase in total revenue from the same period in FY 2015 to a total of $15.8 billion. The payer attributed its increase in total revenue to higher healthcare premium yields and growth in its government business membership.
2. Humana reported a 38 percent increase in profit for Q3 of FY 2016 to a total of $940 million, up from $681 million in the same period last year. The Louisville, Ky.-based payer reported a 2.5 percent increase in revenue from the same period in FY 2015 to a total of $13.7 billion. Increased profit and revenue were driven by gains in Humana's healthcare service and Medicare Advantage arms.
3. Indianapolis-based Anthem's Q3 profit for FY 2016 dropped 5.7 percent from the same period last year to a total of $617.8 million. Despite the health insurer's decreased profit, Anthem reported a 7.5 percent increase in total revenue from the same period in FY 2015 to a total of $21.4 billion.
4. Cigna's profit in Q3 of FY 2016 sank 16.6 percent from the same period last year to a total of $456 million. The Bloomfield, Conn.-based insurer reported a 5.2 percent increase in total revenue from the same period in FY 2015 to a total of $9.9 billion. Increased revenue was boosted by its commercial health insurance business but dented by its government operations.
