Higher healthcare premiums major worry for 61% of Americans

The prospect of paying higher health insurance premiums is more of a concern to Americans than paying medical bills or being denied coverage due to a pre-existing condition, according to a recent Gallup poll.

The data is from Gallup's annual healthcare poll, which was conducted Nov. 1-11. The survey found 61 percent of respondents said paying more for health insurance premiums was a higher concern than having enough money to pay for healthcare (46 percent) and being denied care or going without health coverage (42 percent).

Paying higher premiums is especially unsettling for Americans earning less than $30,000 each year. In this group, 70 percent cite high premiums as a huge worry. While paying higher premiums is as much a concern for Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries as Americans with private health plans, about half of Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries say not having enough money for medical costs is a major concern.
