CMS OKs Alaska's reinsurance expansion proposal

CMS greenlighted Alaska's section 1332 state innovation wavier application to expand its reinsurance program for individuals with high-cost conditions.

The ACA waiver allows the state to implement the Alaska Reinsurance Program beginning Jan. 1, 2018, through Dec. 31, 2022. The state-operated program is designed to cover individual market claims for individuals with one or more of 33 high-cost conditions.

The ARP aims to curb premium costs for healthier individuals. Alaska predicts the program will decrease premiums by 20 percent in 2018.

The state will receive $332 million in federal pass-through funding to offset a significant part of the program's costs.
