BCBS of Texas to absorb 400k state employee members from UnitedHealthcare

Richardson-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas will take on more than 400,000 members as it replaces Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealthcare’s third-party contract with Employees Retirement System of Texas, according to Houston Chronicle.

The transition is effective Sept. 1, and was approved last year following a bidding process. UnitedHealthcare administered health plans to Texas state employees and their families since 2012.

Employees Retirement System of Texas spokesperson Mary Jane Wardlow told Houston Chronicle the plans’ provider network is in development. Roughly 90 percent of providers in UnitedHealthcare’s network will remain in-network with BCBS of Texas following the switch, Ms. Wardlow said.
