Aetna to sell group life, disability business for $1.45B

Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna will spin off its U.S. group life and disability arm to The Hartford (Conn.), a property and casualty insurance firm, for $1.45 billion.

''Aetna has several options for use of the proceeds of the transaction, including but not limited to internal investments to enhance the company's customer experience, share repurchases and repayment of debt,'' the insurer said. The deal could also fund future acquisitions after Aetna's deal with Louisville, Ky.-based Humana failed in February.

The acquisition is slated to close in early November. The deal is subject to state regulatory approvals and closing conditions.
