Violent chase, gunfire in area prompts lockdown at Beaumont Dearborn hospital

A violent high-speed chase, which ended in a fatal shooting, forced the 632-bed Beaumont Hospital-Dearborn (Mich.) into lockdown May 9, according to The Detroit Free Press.

The incident began around 8:30 p.m., when one man started chasing and firing a gun at the other man as they drove. The chase went through several Michigan cities, including Melvindale and Allen Park, before heading to Dearborn.

"One of the parties was armed with an assault rifle and a handgun," Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said. "He was firing at the other party in the other car. They ended up in the area of Beaumont Hospital."

It is unclear what initiated the dispute; however, it was later determined the two men had dated the same woman. One man was the woman's ex-boyfriend and one was the woman's current boyfriend.

The violent chase ended with the shooting suspect killing himself in the hospital's north parking lot. The other man's injuries were not life-threatening.

As the chase entered Dearborn, the hospital was placed on lockdown. The announcement of an active shooting was made over the loudspeaker, causing tense moments for patients, visitors and staff.

"Police pursued the shooter into a parking entrance on our campus. In an abundance of caution, the campus was placed on lockdown," hospital spokesperson Paula Rivera-Kerr told The Detroit Free Press. "At this time, police are investigating the situation and have reassured hospital leadership that all patients, families and staff are safe and secure."

No shots were fired inside of the hospital. The lockdown was lifted at 10:28 p.m. May 9.
