VA extends emergency mental care to those not honorably discharged

A new policy enacted Wednesday will allow veterans who were not honorably discharged to receive emergency mental health care at Veterans Affairs facilities, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The policy will allow veterans who have received other-than-honorable discharge to receive up to 90 days of care for their mental health emergency, including either inpatient or outpatient care. Facilities not run by the VA are not included in this program.

"We want these former service members to know there is some place they can turn if they are facing a mental health emergency — whether it means urgent care at a VA emergency department, a vet center or through the veterans crisis line," said David Shulkin, MD, secretary of the VA.
