Man jumps to death from Georgia hospital roof

A 29-year-old man reportedly jumped to his death from the roof of Gwinnett Medical Center-Lawrenceville (Ga.) July 28, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post.

Police arrived at the hospital campus shortly after 7:45 p.m. after receiving multiple reports of a man scaling the building, according to a police report obtained by the Gwinnett Daily Post.

An officer cited in the report stated that upon arrival, they "witnessed a man falling from the [hospital] building … and strike the sidewalk." Police then attempted to gain entry to the area where the victim stood before he jumped, but could not access it.

Several witnesses who alerted police said they saw the man climb the building. One witness reported seeing the man sit on the edge of the building before jumping off.

Hospital staff reportedly told police the victim had taken an elevator from the lobby to the sixth floor, but were unsure how he climbed the building from there, the report states.

Beth Hardy, public relations and community affairs manager for Gwinnett Medical Center, told Becker's Hospital Review Aug. 1 the individual was not a patient at the hospital at the time of his death.

"An individual who was on the Gwinnett Medical Center-Lawrenceville campus for unknown reasons died after jumping off the North Tower Saturday night. The individual's death was confirmed late Saturday evening by the proper authorities. Our hospital community is shocked and saddened by this unexpected tragic event and grieves along with the family during this difficult time," Ms. Hardy said.

"Gwinnett Medical Center is cooperating with the Lawrenceville Police Department. We will continue to provide our support as they conduct their investigation," she added.

A spokesperson for the sheriff's office told AccessWDUN the unidentified victim was released on bond from jail July 27. He was arrested in connection with the theft of a church van that had been reported stolen in Florida.
