Hospital officials summoned fire fighters after a fire was reported in a construction zone inside the facility. Approximately 225 employees and 100 patients were evacuated. No injuries were reported.
“The location of the fire allowed the smoke to spread out in the major access areas [of the hospital] so we had to manage the movement of the patients to keep them away from the smoke,” David Callender, MD, president of The University of Texas Medical Branch, said in a statement.
John Sealy Hospital is part of The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
John Sealy Hospital and John Sealy Annex are closed until further notice. The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
