The incident occurred around 4 a.m. PT Thursday near Kaiser Permanente Zion Medical Center in San Diego.

The EMT driving the vehicle reportedly told police he was driving the patient to the facility to receive dialysis treatment when he fell asleep at the wheel, causing the ambulance to veer into a curb and flip onto its side, according to the report.

The driver and patient were unharmed. Police said the patient avoided serious injury because he was strapped to the gurney and stabilized during the incident. A second EMT riding in the back of the vehicle with the patient suffered minor to moderate injuries, including a cut on his head.

The patient and injured EMT were transported to nearby Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego for treatment.
