CHI-owned Nebraska hospital transitions to outpatient care facility: 3 things to know

CHI Health Midlands in Papillion, Neb., has spent the past year transitioning from a full-service hospital to an outpatient services center, according to the Omaha World-Herald.

Kevin Miller, president of CHI Health Midlands and CHI Health Lakeside in Omaha, Neb., which are part of Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives, said the shift to outpatient service at CHI Health Midlands resulted after several discussions with community members about residents' health needs.

Here are three things to know about CHI Health Midlands' transition to outpatient care.

1. Last January, CHI Health Midlands opened a $2.4 million ambulatory surgery center as part of a larger renovation project. Several months later, dwindling patient rates forced the hospital to close its intensive care unit, the report states.

2. Mr. Miller told the Omaha World-Herald continuing to operate an ICU at CHI Health Midlands did not make financial sense given the unit's low patient count and the fact that several nearby hospitals have much more expansive ICUs.

"If we're going to bend the cost curve … you have to be willing to leverage your other locations," Mr. Miller told the publication.

3. While the hospital has spent the last year transitioning to an ASC services provider, the hospital still maintains 28 inpatient beds.
