Researchers introduced the texting feature to new parents at an urban academic pediatric primary care practice from February 2016 to December 2017. They included 157 parent-child groups in the study, of which 79 were assigned to use the tool. Eighty-seven percent of the parents had limited health literacy.
The study shows 87 percent of infants in the group that used the texts received two flu vaccine doses, compared to 67 percent of infants in the group that did not use it.
The group that used the text feature visited the emergency department less than the group that didn’t use it.
